JABALPUR: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped near the washroom of Singrauli railway station by a 22-year-old local while her husband had briefly stepped away. The survivor was forced to travel 300 km to Katni to lodge an FIR as no woman officer was present at Singrauli GRP.As no woman officer was available even at Katni, GRP Jabalpur station in-charge Sanjeevani Rajput rushed to Katni on Sunday morning to record the survivor’s statement and register a case. The crime was committed at the largely deserted railway station past midnight on Saturday. Police arrested the accused, Devlal Saket, on Monday and produced him in a court, which remanded him to jail. The couple, who work in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonebhadra district, often travel back to their native village in Sidhi on weekends. On the night of September 6, they reached Singrauli station to catch a connecting train to Sidhi past midnight. According to police, the woman’s husband went to fetch something briefly when she headed to the washroom. There, the accused allegedly intercepted her, raped her and even revealed his name, telling her that no one could harm him. The couple later approached a local police outpost but, in the absence of a woman officer, they were directed to Katni GRP. Jabalpur station in-charge Sanjeevani Rajput, who recorded her statement and registered a case the next morning, said, “I went to Katni and her statement was recorded. A case was registered and the accused was arrested on Monday.” On Monday, a GRP team led by additional SP Bhawna Marawi and investigating officer Sanjeevani Rajput reached Singrauli, traced the accused, and arrested him. He was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.
