5 killed, including a police officer, in shooting at New York City office building

Employees in a nearby building were told to shelter in place and to stay away from windows.

“An incident has occurred outside of the building,” said a warning broadcast on the fifth floor of 399 Park Ave., video from the scene shows.

“Please stay inside, shelter in place, stay away from the windows until further instructions from the NYPD,” the person issuing the alert says over the system.

Kathleen Benanti, who shared the video of the alert, told NBC News, “Some people came running back inside saying people were shouting on the street that there was an active shooter.”

Then the safety director issued the alert to shelter in place and stay away from windows, Benanti said, adding that everyone is safe.

“I had a bit of a ptsd response that came out of the blue,” she said in a message. “I lived through 9/11 and all the sights/sounds reminded me of that day. I’m ok now.”
